There is no doubt that Hugo Chavez is a very charismatic and iconic character.

As any politician knows, image is very important to maintain their leadership position.
Hugo Chavez knows this and has been cultivating a very complete image that serves his political goals as his “revolutionary process” continues.

The following is a depiction of the many images Mr. Chavez has cultivated for himself and a small dissertation of their purpose:

This is the younger, leaner (much, much leaner) Lutenant Colonel that captivated Venezuelan people with his promises of change and prosperity. His failed coup-de-etat against President Carlos Andres Perez, propelled Chavez to fame and made hin a household name in Venezuela.

In 1998 we saw Hugo Chavez, the democratic candidate. Chavez won the elections by a landslide and so his “pacific revolution” began.

This version of Chavez image was very civilized and commensurate so as not to upset possible voters or foreign capitals. This is the Capitalist version of Chavez, the one you could do business with.

This also is the Hugo Chavez that Univision’s reporter Jorge Ramos interviewed in 1998

After winning several elections and consolidating power, we could see the stronger meaner version of Chavez. His true colors shown, aggressive language and vitriolic rhetoric came to be the iconic image of the, now unmasked, not-so-democratic leader of Venezuela.

This is a very interesting (chubbier) variation of the original “Candidate Chavez” version. We can see this specimen, whenever something goes wrong with his government, when he feels the need to improve his image abroad, etc. This is the Hugo Chavez, we saw immediately after the attemped coup in 2002. We can also see this version of Chavez when he travels to the United States, Europe or any pro-western civilized country. This is the “I’m sorry, can we work things out” Chavez.

After his misterious dissapearance in Cuba, and due to strong rumors about his health. Hugo Chavez was forced to admit he was sick and has Cancer. After his treatment started (or before it even began) we saw Chavez presenting a very different image. Instead of clinging to his “Strong man” image, Hugo Chavez embraced a new look by shaving off his hair (and eyebrows) and wearing his reading glasses very often as to present a more humane and paternal image of himself.

We think he will overcome this disease and it will be interesting to see what other “extreme makeover” he will present us.

How does Chavez see himself?

Constantly showing admiration for Simon Bolivar, we believe, no doubt, Chavez sees himself as a modern re-incarnation of the Venezuelan Liberator.

Only history will have the correct image for his legacy.

Google's PacMan Doodle

Amazingly, after I clicked the doodle, expecting to see the results of a search like “pacman” or something similar, I was surprised to hear the familiar too-reh-ro” melody from the pacman game telling me to better get ready or be eaten by the little ghosts.

I found myself playing for a good ten minutes until I came back to my senses and returned to work (or to write this post if you wanna call that work).

Please Google, have mercy on us and think of the country’s productivity wasted!!
